Mode Spectrum

Identify modes by their emotional color — bright to dark

A scale/mode plays over a drone. You identify it. Taught as a brightness spectrum: Lydian (brightest) → Ionian → Mixolydian → Dorian → Aeolian → Phrygian → Locrian (darkest). The emotional color is the cue, not interval analysis.

How it works

  1. 1.
    Hear the drone
    Root drone establishes tonal center.
  2. 2.
    Hear the mode
A scale plays ascending and descending over the drone, then a short melody using the mode.
  3. 3.
    Feel the brightness
Before answering, notice: does it feel bright/uplifting or dark/tense? Place it on the spectrum.
  4. 4.
    Identify the mode
Select from mode options. Start with just Major vs Dorian vs Mixolydian (the most common), expand to all 7.
